Il y a des retours que l’on attendait : M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce<\/strong>, Scorpions<\/strong>, Zidane<\/strong> en 2006, et ceux que l’on attendait pas, et Before the Dawn<\/strong> fait partie de la seconde cat\u00e9gorie. Le groupe finlandais de death m\u00e9lodique s’est s\u00e9par\u00e9 d\u00e9but 2013 apr\u00e8s leur album \u00ab\u00a0Rise of the Phoenix<\/em><\/span>\u00ab\u00a0. Leur musique \u00e9voluait dans la m\u00eame veine que Insomnium<\/strong>, \u00e0 savoir un death m\u00e9lodique tr\u00e8s teint\u00e9 de m\u00e9lancolie, mais peut-\u00eatre trop proche de leur homologues finlandais (encore plus flagrant en live quand j’ai vu les 2 groupes \u00e0 la suite !). J’appr\u00e9cie beaucoup le style, donc lorsque j’ai appris la reformation de Before the Dawn<\/strong> avec un nouvel album \u00ab\u00a0Stormbringers<\/em><\/span>\u00ab\u00a0, j’ai saisi l’occasion !<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

J’en ai profit\u00e9 pour faire quelques recherches et il y a du changement !\u00a0Tuomas Saukkonen<\/em>\u00a0passe de guitariste\/chanteur \u00e0 la batterie (et \u00e9galement guitare rythmique en studio), le chant est maintenant assur\u00e9 par le vainqueur de Voice of Finland 2022 :\u00a0Paavo Laapotti\u00a0<\/em>et\u00a0Juho R\u00e4ih\u00e4<\/em>\u00a0(Swallow the Sun<\/strong>) garde la guitare lead qu’il occupait d\u00e9j\u00e0. \u00ab\u00a0Stormbringers<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb comporte 9 pistes pour 40minutes, c’est parti pour la d\u00e9couverte ! Il n’y a pas que le line-up du groupe qui a \u00e9volu\u00e9, la musique aussi, et plus particuli\u00e8rement le chant. Il y a maintenant beaucoup de chants clairs; qui m\u00eame s’ils sont bons ne me convainquent absolument pas. Ils ne s’int\u00e8grent pas bien au style selon moi, et cassent la dynamique des morceaux. Les parties growls et plus sombres n’ont rien \u00e0 envier aux ma\u00eetres du genre que sont Insomnium<\/strong>. Before the Dawn<\/strong> donne l’impression d’h\u00e9siter entre \u00ab\u00a0garder\u00a0\u00bb son style originel et \u00e9voluer vers quelque chose de nouveau, sans jamais r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 choisir. Apr\u00e8s l’introduction \u00ab\u00a0The Dawn<\/span>\u00ab\u00a0, \u00ab\u00a0Destroyer<\/span>\u00a0\u00bb d\u00e9bute avec un son bien lourd comme je les aiment pour laisser la place \u00e0 du chant clair qui pourrait tendre vers du folk. Le reste du couplet est en multipistes, la principale en chant clair et la seconde, en retrait, est en growl : l’effet n’est pas mauvais mais la m\u00e9lancolie n’est pas l\u00e0, ni la puissance. On retrouve ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments sur les parties instrumentales qui sont tr\u00e8s bonnes, notamment un super riff pour les couplets. La dualit\u00e9 est pos\u00e9e entre \u00ab\u00a0l’ancien\u00a0\u00bb Before the Dawn<\/strong> et le nouveau.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00ab\u00a0Reveries<\/span>\u00a0\u00bb renforce cette dualit\u00e9 mais avec plus de ma\u00eetrise, les chants clairs et growls (qui sont d’ailleurs bien puissants et \u00ab\u00a0nets\u00a0\u00bb) se r\u00e9pondent, les parties multipistes ne mettent aucune des deux techniques de chant en avant. Le rendu est plus coh\u00e9rent, toujours aliment\u00e9 par des parties instrumentales inspir\u00e9es. Une fois cette dualit\u00e9 \u00e9tablie, \u00ab\u00a0Stormbringers<\/span>\u00a0\u00bb ne pr\u00e9sente pas de r\u00e9elle surprise, avec des morceaux dans la lign\u00e9e de \u00ab\u00a0Reveries<\/span>\u00ab\u00a0. Je ressent une certaine d\u00e9ception quant \u00e0 l’\u00e9volution qu’\u00e0 choisi le groupe, car les passages les plus convaincants restent ceux chant\u00e9s en growls. Le chant clair ne s’accorde pas franchement \u00e0 la musique du groupe et c’est bien dommage. Les compositions sont tr\u00e8s bonnes, \u00e0 l’instar de \u00ab\u00a0Chains<\/span>\u00a0\u00bb et surtout de \u00ab\u00a0Divided<\/span>\u00a0\u00bb ou les growls sont majoritaires. Il me faut reconna\u00eetre, sans compl\u00e9tement changer d’avis, qu’au fur et \u00e0 mesure que j’avance dans l’album et que \u00ab\u00a0j’oublie\u00a0\u00bb le pass\u00e9 death m\u00e9lodique m\u00e9lancolique de Before the Dawn<\/strong>, les chants clairs me choquent moins : m\u00eame s’ils ne collent pas totalement \u00e0 l’ambiance des compositions, car je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re toujours les passages en growls, mais la dualit\u00e9 \u00e0 l’int\u00e9rieur des morceaux est appr\u00e9ciable surtout lorsqu’elle est bien marqu\u00e9e comme sur le titre final \u00ab\u00a0The Weight<\/span>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Le bilan de cet album \u00ab\u00a0Stormbringers<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u00bb n’est pas simple \u00e0 faire, car mes \u00ab\u00a0souvenirs\u00a0\u00bb du death m\u00e9lo sont peut \u00eatre trop pr\u00e9sents et m’emp\u00eachent d’entrer \u00e0 100% dans cet album. D’un c\u00f4t\u00e9, il y a les tr\u00e8s bons passages death avec des growls soign\u00e9s et puissants, de l’autre des passages en chants clairs qui font retomber l’atmosph\u00e8re. Cependant, en occultant la partie death, ces derniers ne sont pas si d\u00e9rangeants. J’ai l’impression de me situer au m\u00eame point que le groupe : c’est-\u00e0-dire tiraill\u00e9 entre ce qui a fait leur succ\u00e8s, et ce renouveau impos\u00e9 par un changement presque complet de line-up. Le probl\u00e8me, c’est qu’\u00e0 jongler avec les 2 facettes au niveau du chant, Before the Dawn<\/strong> n’arrive \u00e0 convaincre pleinement ni l’une ni l’autre. Il reste un point o\u00f9 le groupe n’a pas chang\u00e9 et est toujours aussi convaincant, c’est la musique en elle-m\u00eame, qui \u00e0 elle seule m\u00e9rite l’\u00e9coute de \u00ab\u00a0Stormbringers<\/em><\/span>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
