Annonc\u00e9 en grandes pompes, Bruce Dickinson<\/b> reprend sa carri\u00e8re en solo en parall\u00e8le d’Iron Maiden<\/b>. Le charismatique et infatigable chanteur sort son 5\u00e8me album : \u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, le premier depuis \u00ab\u00a0Tyranny Of Souls<\/i><\/u>\u00a0\u00bb sorti en 2005. Comme son nom l’indique, il s’agit d’un concept album, qui aura mis 5 ans \u00e0 se concr\u00e9tiser ! \u00c0 noter que \u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00a0\u00bb s’accompagne \u00e9galement de comics <\/i>\u00e9crits par Bruce <\/i>lui-m\u00eame, et que l’on peut acheter (avis aux collectionneurs, donc) ! Je ne me suis jamais plong\u00e9 totalement dans la discographie de Bruce Dickinson<\/b>, mais j’appr\u00e9cie ses titres en solo, notamment \u00ab\u00a0Tears of the Dragon<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Tattoed Millionaire<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. J’esp\u00e8re que l’album sera dans la m\u00eame lign\u00e9e !\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

L’album comporte 10 titres et raconte \u00ab\u00a0une histoire sombre et adulte de pouvoir, d’abus et de lutte pour l’identit\u00e9, sur fond de g\u00e9nie scientifique et occulte\u00a0\u00bb, pour reprendre les explications fournies sur le site de \u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. Ce concept ne se ressent pas forc\u00e9ment musicalement sur tous les titres, mais au niveau des paroles le th\u00e8me est toujours pr\u00e9sent. Se sont d’ailleurs \u00ab\u00a0Afterglow of Ragnarok<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Rain on the Graves<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, qui ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9voil\u00e9 les premiers avec des clips tr\u00e8s travaill\u00e9s. Ces 2 chansons ont des ambiances tr\u00e8s sombres, voir mystiques avec un son tr\u00e8s lourd ainsi que quelques passages batterie \u00e0 la double p\u00e9dale. On est bien loin d’Iron Maiden<\/b> et, globalement c’est une bonne nouvelle, car\u00a0Bruce Dickinson<\/b> a sa propre identit\u00e9 dans ses projets solo, c’est ce qui me pla\u00eet.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Pour revenir strictement au plan musical et \u00e0 la composition des morceaux : les diff\u00e9rents instruments sont en retrait, la voix de Bruce est LA star qui est mise en avant. L’exemple le plus flagrant est le solo de guitare sur \u00ab\u00a0Many Doors to Hell<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb qui est mis en retrait pour accompagner le chant de Bruce<\/i>. Cependant les soli sont tr\u00e8s bons, notamment sur \u00ab\u00a0Rain on the Grave<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb mais aussi sur \u00ab\u00a0Mistress of Mercy<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. Les parties batteries par contre sont beaucoup plus discr\u00e8tes : elles servent les chansons, mais je n’en ai aucune qui m’est rest\u00e9e en t\u00eate ou qui m’a fait tendre l’oreille. A contrario, une chanson comme \u00ab\u00a0Fingers in the Wound<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb d\u00e9tonne compl\u00e9tement avec ses sonorit\u00e9s orientales amen\u00e9es par des violons. L’ambiance de ce titre n’est pas sans rappeler Myrath<\/b>. La seule chose que je pourrais dire sur \u00ab\u00a0Fingers in the Wound<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, est que c’est le morceau le plus court de l’album (moins de 4 minutes) : j’en aurai bien pris d’avantage !<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

J’ai \u00e9voqu\u00e9 pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment que, dans sa globalit\u00e9, \u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, avait sa propre identit\u00e9, loin de celle d’Iron Maiden<\/b>. Il y a cependant quelques exceptions : la plus flagrante est \u00ab\u00a0Eternity Has Failed<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. Le cas est particulier, et il est d’ailleurs expliqu\u00e9 dans le booklet <\/i>de l’album : le titre \u00ab\u00a0If Eternity Should Fail<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb devait \u00eatre le morceau d’ouverture de l’album solo de Bruce Dickinson<\/b>. Steve Harris<\/i> a finalement d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de l’utiliser sur \u00ab\u00a0The Book of Souls<\/i><\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. L’intrigue de \u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00a0\u00bb a donc chang\u00e9 et le titre a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u00e9g\u00e8rement retravaill\u00e9 : ajouts de pistes vocales, quelques changements dans les paroles pour arriver \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0Eternity Has Failed<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. Si vous avez aim\u00e9 le titre d’Iron Maiden<\/b>, vous aimerez forc\u00e9ment celui-l\u00e0, parce que les diff\u00e9rences sont mineures : en compl\u00e9ment de ce que j’ai mentionn\u00e9 pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment, seuls le refrain et un peu plus d’orchestrations diff\u00e8rent. Apr\u00e8s cet exemple dans lequel c’est Bruce <\/i>qui a inspir\u00e9 Iron Maiden<\/b>, il y a bien \u00e9videmment l’inverse, avec la fin du titre \u00ab\u00a0Resurrection Men<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb et son rythme galopant typique (qui rel\u00e8ve d’ailleurs le morceau). Le d\u00e9but du morceau est quasiment a cappella et donc totalement initi\u00e9 par le chant de Bruce Dickinson, qui semble un peu \u00e0 la peine et en fait trop \u00e0 mon go\u00fbt. L’autre morceau qui n’aurait pas eu \u00e0 rougir de sa pr\u00e9sence sur un album de la Vierge de Fer est \u00ab\u00a0Mistress of Mercy<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, qui est plus rapide mais agr\u00e9able sans plus. \u00ab\u00a0Face in the Mirror<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb sonne comme du vieux Bruce Dickinson<\/span>, fa\u00e7on \u00ab\u00a0Tattoed Millionaire<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. Une balade assez sobre au niveau du chant ou, au contraire de \u00ab\u00a0Resurrection Men<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, j’aurai voulu qu’il en donne un peu plus ! \u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00a0\u00bb se cl\u00f4ture avec les 2 titres les plus longs de l’album. Tout d’abord \u00ab\u00a0Shadow of the Gods<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb que je d\u00e9compose en 2 parties, la premi\u00e8re port\u00e9e par une grande performance de Bruce <\/i>au chant. La seconde est plus rock mais je suis moins convaincu par les lignes de chant plus graves. Enfin pour finir, \u00ab\u00a0Sonata (Immortal Beloved)<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, qui d\u00e9passe les 9 minutes mais reste mid-tempo tout le long. La performance de Bruce <\/i>est magistrale sur le refrain avec ses \u00ab\u00a0Save Me Now\u00a0\u00bb, le solo de guitare qui cl\u00f4ture l’album est \u00e9galement tr\u00e8s bon pour finir en beaut\u00e9.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00a0\u00bb n’est que le premier album du retour de Bruce Dickinson<\/b> en solo, accompagn\u00e9 des comics <\/i>pour raconter une histoire qui n’est manifestement pas finie. Cette premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape est une r\u00e9ussite, malgr\u00e9 quelques titres un peu plus faibles : \u00ab\u00a0Face in the Mirror<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, \u00ab\u00a0Resurrection Men<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. Ils sont largement contrebalanc\u00e9s par des morceaux originaux qui nous emm\u00e8nent avec eux : \u00ab\u00a0Rain on the Graves<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, \u00ab\u00a0Fingers in the Wound<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, \u00ab\u00a0Sonata (Immortal Beloved)<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0, qui ont des ambiances bien \u00e0 elles et pouss\u00e9es jusque dans les clips pour \u00ab\u00a0Rain on the Graves<\/u>\u00a0\u00bb et \u00ab\u00a0Afterglow of Ragnarok<\/u>\u00ab\u00a0. Tout n’est pas parfait, mais vous \u00eates s\u00fbrs de passer un bon moment en \u00e9coutant \u00ab\u00a0The Mandrake Project<\/i><\/u>\u00ab\u00a0.
